The Indonesian Business Council hosted a roundtable at the Indonesia Economic Summit on the role of the carbon market in advancing climate finance and sustainable growth.
In September 2023 Indonesia launched a carbon exchange – which trades carbon credits and carbon quotas – to reduce emissions and promote green technology innovation. The exchange opened to foreign buyers on January 20 this year, marking a significant milestone.

Roundtable co-host Mari Elka Pangestu, the Presidential Special Envoy for International Trade and Vice Chair of the National Economic Council, told the roundtable that President Prabowo was committed to scaling up the carbon market.
Sam Porter, Counsellor for Economic Governance and Infrastructure at the Australian Embassy Jakarta, who was invited to be a discussant at the roundtable, said he was excited about the potential for the carbon market in Indonesia.
“Australia is committed to seeing carbon markets with sound governance, market integrity and environmental impacts. We are excited about the potential for collaboration with Indonesia,” he said.

Through KINETIK, Prospera – the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Economic Development – researched Indonesia’s carbon credit tax system and provided advice on the development of a carbon market roadmap.
